5.1.3 Children with Disabilities Team Criteria

SCOPE OF THIS CHAPTER

The criteria outlined below provides guidance in relation to children and young people in need, for whom referral for intervention by the Children's Disability Team may be considered.

The criteria relates both to children who have a disability at birth and to children/young people who, during childhood or adolescence, become disabled as a result of illness, accident or injury.  Children's eligibility may be reviewed if progress is made.

Criteria

1. Children who at birth or during childhood have a clearly identified severe disability, or who following a multi agency assessment are identified within the severe disability group

Severe disability is defined as one or more of the following:

  • Non or severely restricted mobility
  • Severe learning disability
  • Severe challenging behaviours, as a result of a diagnosed disability, which may include autism
  • Severe visual or severe hearing impairment
  • Technology dependence (including children with complex health needs)
  • Life limiting illnesses
2. Children who have a number of disabilities, (of which at least two are diagnosed as moderate disability) that alone are not deemed as severe, that combined, produce sufficient/significant needs to warrant support from the Children's Disability Team.

It should be noted that children within this group are rare and could only be accepted for a service following negotiation with the Team Manager for Children with Disabilities.
